The Main Technique Points of Cultivation

The root of castor-oil plant is upgrowth, it has one bulky taproot and 3-7 biggish side roots. The taproot can grow down to ground 2-4 meters, the side roots can grow outspread to 1.5-2 meters. It has a strong adapt ability to soil, and can grow in all kinds of soil if it has a good drain; it has no requirement to the former crops; the demand technique of cultivation is simple. It can gain good economic benefits to grow in the drought weak land. The output and benefit can be raise up greatly if plant in cultivable land for drought cultivation.

   The main crossbreeds of castor-oil plant that we breed up and extend are “ Zibima No. 1to 6”. Among them, “Zibima No.1,2,5” have passed the examine and approve of Breed Examine and Approve Committee of Province. Compare with regular  varieties and demonstration in the big area experiments, they can increase production greatly. They possess ant drought, bear barren and salty land etc. They have more strong adaptability than the others. Except waterlogging land, almost all the land can plant. Middle fertility soil can get  3.75-4.5 t./ha.output, the high yield plot record in Xinjiang is more than 6.75t./ha..

The Film Cover: The film cover is a valid measure for increase output and save invest (manpower weeding and irrigation). 1st. In early spring, it can enhance temperature, prolong procreative time about 15 days; 2nd. It can keep soil humidity; 3rd. Prevent weeds, save manpower. The film cover only need to invest 300-450yuan/ha.. The cost is far lower than weeding and irrigating. The film cover is a particular important technique measure in bad irrigation area or dry farming.

Sowing: In Middle Region of Shandong Province ,the seed time is suitable that from the last ten-day of March to the first ten-day of April. It is suitable to plant in the last twenty days of April for the regions of Northeast and Inner Mongolia of China. In Middle Region of Shandong Province, row spacing is 100-120 cm; the spacing of two plants is 70-80cm; it can grow 10,500-13,500 plants/ha.. In the regions of Northeast and Inner Mongolia of China, the row spacing is 100-120 cm(it can plant in both side of a ridge ) ; the spacing of two plants is 60cm ; it can grow 13,500-15,000 plants/ha.. In fertile land or dry lean soil, you can plant sparseness or close. Each hole put in 2-3 seeds, the depth of cover soil is 4-5cm. For insure sowing once to get all seedlings, it should be enough moisture in soil to sowing. When moisture is not enough in soil, you should be irrigating the holes first, and then sowing. In addition, you can adopt nourishment bowl to cultivate seedling first if the region that no forest time is short, then transfer it. This method can prolong procreation time, so it can increase output greatly.

Check, Repair, Settle the seedlings: The castor-oil plant can easy survive if transfer it in seedling time( before 3 leaves). If found seedlings absent, you need transfer new seedlings to repair it in time. it have 3-4 leaves to settle down seedlings, and each leave one seedling. If settle down seedlings too late, it will be gotten weak seedlings and the output will be effected.

Fertilization: the fertility of soil is of a sort, apply fertilizer can significant exaltation yield. Fertilization can raise up output greatly. The basic fertilizer is each 3-5kg of N, P₂O₅,K₂O per 667m², and manure 1-2t./667 m². When the first main spike’s bud  coming out, Supplement fertilizer each 1.5-2kg of N, P₂O₅,K₂O per 667m² . If the fertility of soil is good, you can supplement some fertilizer according to growing of plant.

Train : Train is an important measure to increases yield. When the first spike bud of flower coming out,  get rid of the heart sprout on the top, under the flower reserve 2-3 first branches, and erase the others. Thereafter, according to the growing status of plant, make sure the branch amount of the second, third, fourth, fifth. If planting too late, you can increase the output by three ways that plant the big spike type of castor-oil plant, increase the density and train. The density is 15,000-22,500 per hectare, the branch only  reserve 4-5, the rest all trim away.

Apply of the plant growth regulator: In the region of North China, the plant is easy to grow too flourishing in summer, particularly in the fertile field, the trophic growth and procreate growth appears an unbalance phenomenon, the yield is affected seriously. If the field grow too flourishing , you can use plant growth regulator to make control as it high 50-70cm. the effect will be ideal.

Harvest: The series of “Zibima” crossbreeds possess the characteristic that capsule do not burst. In the Northeast, Northwest and North of China can harvest in one time. Besides the south region of North China, you should harvest in batch. The method is as follows: When 80% capsules of  spike turn yellow, you can cut the whole spike. Avoid to effect the output and quality, don’t cut too earlier. After harvest, make it dry, threshing in time. When moisture down bellow 9%, you put it in bags to sell.
